China SOLAS has several new developments.

A China SOLAS Working Group was established by the China National Committee for IGBP (CNC-IGBP) as its 10th Working Group in December 2002 and appointed Prof Guang-Yu Shi as the leader of the Group.

Recently the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) decided to support the China SOLAS Project with a budget of 8 Million RMB (about one million US dollars) for the next 4 years. Prof Guang-Yu Shi and Prof. Feng from China Ocean University will be the PIs of the Project.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences initiated an International Dust Storm Program (DUST) last year (see Nature, 9 January 2003, p101) and Prof Guang-Yu Shi will serve as the leader of the working group for the development of its science plan. The effect of dust particles on ocean environment is one of the foci of DUST and I think this will give us another opportunity to do some research related to the SOLAS in China.

In order to disseminate the SOLAS Program to the Chinese scientific community we are planning to translate the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy into Chinese.

The Chinese Working Group for SOLAS plans to make a suggestion: Initiate a regional sub-program for SOLAS. That is an East Asian programme, which will mainly involve China, Japan and Korea because we have some common interesting on the Asian environment issues such as the Asian dust storms and other pollutants.

  • A new project: China surface ocean - lower atmosphere study: biogeochemical and physical process coupling
  • A budget of 8 Million RMB (about one million US dollars) By National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)
  • From 2004-2007
  • In the area of The Yellow Sea & The South China Sea

Focus of China SOLAS Phase I

SEATS

north

  • Aeolian dust and marine primary productivity
  • Contributions of atmospheric nitrogen Chinese coastal and marginal seas
  • Processes controlling mass and energy exchanges at the interface of atmosphere and the ocean.
  • Geographic and temporal variability of Air-Sea CO2 fluxes
  • Fluxes of greenhouse gases at the interface and their effect of cloud and radiation budget

We have cruises in 2005 and 2006. In the Yellow Sea in 2005 and 2006, Mar.-Apr and in the South China Sea in 2006, Apr.-May (see above).
