SAGE (SOLAS Air-Sea Gas Exchange Experiment, March-April 2004)SAGE

This dual tracer, iron enrichment experiment was conducted from NIWA’s ocean-going research vessel, RV Tangaroa. Led by New Zealand SOLAS, but with major contributions from the US and many other countries, the cruise featured an impressive interdisciplinary array of scientists. They managed to make some rare measurements of gas transfer at very high wind speeds and witnessed an interesting biological response to the iron addition.

FeCycle (Jan-Feb 2003)The RV Tangaroa

Scientists from New Zealand, US, Canada and Germany participated in this voyage to investigate physical, photochemical, algal and foodweb mediated iron supply, removal and cycling within an SF6-labelled patch of ocean in the HNLC waters south of New Zealand. links with Australia - ANZ-SOLAS

Keith Hunter (Univ. of Otago) and Philip Boyd (NIWA) have been funded for 3 years to investigate event-based dust storms from central Australia, their dispersion, fate and iron chemistry. This work will comprise both environmental monitoring (dust monitoring sites, SeaWiFS ocean colour and aerosol optical depth) and lab iron chemistry experiments. This research is in collaboration with Grant McTainsh (Griffith University, Australia) and will strengthen ANZ-SOLAS links.

International SOLAS links

Cliff Law and Philip Boyd participated in the recent Canadian C-SOLAS iron release experiment (SERIES) in the NE Pacific. Scientists from many countries were involved in FeCycle and SAGE.

Future Plans

NZ SOLAS is currently developing plans to follow up from the 2 previous SF6 experiments (see above). Some of these will be perturbation experiments, some not. Further plans will be made available as they evolve.
