Current status of SOLAS planning

Planning of the national SOLAS project has been initiated recently in Taiwan. The first planning meeting took place on May 3, 2002. It was decided that the working group constituted the core of the Scientific Steering Committee. Additional members will be sought from communities of atmospheric and oceanic sciences in Taiwan.

Linkage of the present research programmes with SOLAS.

The present programmes related to SOLAS activities include the following projects:

1. LORECS: Long-term Observation and Research in the East China Sea (Coordinator: Prof. G.-C. Gong, Email: gcgong AT mail.ntou.edu.tw)
2. SWEET: Strait Watch on the Environment and Ecosystem with Telemetry (Coordinator: Prof. C.T.A. Chen, Email: ctchen AT mail.nsysu.edu.tw)
3. SEATS: South East Asia Time-Series Station (Contacts: Dr. F.-K. Shiah, Email: fkshiah AT ccms.ntu.edu.tw, or K.-K. Liu, Email: kkliu AT ccms.ntu.edu.tw)

Opportunities for the national participation in international SOLAS activities

It is very likely that Taiwanese scientists will participate in international SOLAS activities by tuning the existing projects to fit the SOLAS needs. For instance, the SEATS project may include core measurements required by SOLAS. The SEATS cruises may provide opportunities for domestic or international SOLAS scientists to participate. In addition, the SEATS moorings for ADCP and thermister chains may serve as platforms to accommodate sensors for SOLAS purposes.

The archiving of SOLAS related data will be most likely handled by the Ocean Data Bank of the National Center for Ocean Research (NCOR), Taipei. The secretariat for the national SOLAS program will probably reside at NCOR.
