SOLAS updates
Open Science Conference (16-19 November 2009)
The latest SOLAS OSC that took place in Barcelona last month was a very successful conference, bringing together 254 scientists from 29 different countries.
Some very exciting science was presented during the 8 plenary talk sessions and 3 poster sessions. This year's conference featured 2 new additions to the "traditional" programme: Advanced techniques for SOLAS and the application of genomics to ocean-atmosphere studies. These included, among others, talks on the application of genomics to studies of DMSP degradation and N2 fixation, nanometer-scale mass spectrometry, gliders and geo-engineering.

Student poster competition
The best student poster prizes were awarded to Kevin Randall (Canada), Annette Kock (Germany), Wiebke Mohr (Germany) and Sophie Tran (France) (shown in photo, from left to right) in recognition of their outstanding work.
Their posters will soon be available on the SOLAS website and the next issue of the SOLAS newsletter will feature a short article by each student.

COST Action 735
The 5th COST Action 735 Management Committee meeting took place in Barcelona on 19 November 2009. The committee recommended 5 sub-working group meetings and 3 Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) for approval. The minutes will soon be available on the COST Action 735 website. |
SOLAS Newsletter Issue 10
The next issue of the SOLAS Newsletter will be released in January 2010. It will feature reports and articles from the Summer School and the Open Science Conference, as well as reports from COST Action 735 and other SOLAS-related meetings.

Climate protection fellowships (deadline 15 January 2010)
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is granting up to 20
International Climate Protection Fellowships. The fellowships
will enable prospective leaders from non-European
threshold and developing countries engaged in the field of climate protection and resource conservation to conduct a research-related project of
their choice with a host in Germany. More details and application package
European Space Agency (ESA) postdoctoral fellowships (deadline 16 January 2010)

News from our sponsors
The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) released a 'Climate Change Index' during a press conference at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. This index combines atmospheric CO2, temperature, sea level and sea ice into a single figure that rises steadily from 1980. Read more
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) is solliciting news or science highlights from the climate research community to be posted on the WCRP webpage. This is a way to increase visibility of the programme activities and accomplishments. Please e-mail the WCRP secretariat.
