News from the SOLAS IPO

SOLAS Executive Officer now in Kiel -new contact details

Emilie Breviere is starting to work at IFM-GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany, as of 1 April. Her new e-mail address is ebreviere{at}ifm-geomar.de (full postal address at the bottom of the page), although she will continue using her UEA e-mail for the next few months.

The 'nodal office' in Norwich will be without a Project Officer from 1 to 7 April, while Sophie Seeyave is between contracts. Any e-mails addressed to Sophie (s.seeyave{at}uea.ac.uk) should be sent on or after 8th April as her e-mail address will be frozen during that period.

Interviews for the new Project Officer will take place on 16 April.

10th SOLAS Scientific Steering Committee meeting

The 10th SOLAS SSC meeting will take place in Lueneburg, near Hamburg, Germany, from 26 to 28 April. It will be attended by 20 people, including SSC Chair and members, representatives of the 4 SOLAS parent programmes and the IPO staff. The working papers will be made available on the SOLAS website in mid-April.


Opportunities for early career scientists

International Summer School 'ClimECO2: Oceans, Marine Ecosystems and Society Facing Climate Change -a Multidisciplinary Approach'
Co-organised by IUEM, IMBER and Europole Mer, the summer school will take place in Brest, France, from 23 to 27 August.
Applications are welcome from both natural and social scientists (PhD, Post-docs, engineers and researchers) working on topics related to “oceans and climate change” and who are interested in the challenging issue of crossing the barriers between disciplines.

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) fellowship scheme
The scheme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early career scientists in Antarctic scientific research, allowing researchers from one SCAR Member country to undertake research in an institute in another SCAR Member country. Applicants should be either currently studying for or within five years of completing a PhD and their research should make a contribution to the objectives of one of the Scientific Research Programmes endorsed by SCAR. Partnership for Observation of Global Oceans (POGO) and Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Visiting Fellowship Programme
The scheme is aimed at scientists, technicians, graduate students (PhD) and Post Doctoral Fellows involved in oceanographic work in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Priority will be given to early career applicants. The fellowship offers successful candidates the opportunity to visit other oceanographic centres for a period of between 1 to 3 months and covers international airfare and a stipend for living expenses for up to 3 months.

In addition, POGO is offering a special AMT Visiting Fellowship for on-board training on an Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) Cruise. This fellowship offers the successful candidate the opportunity to participate in the preparation of the cruise at Plymouth Marine Laboratory or at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton for up to 1 month prior to the cruise, participation in the cruise itself (12 October-25 November) and up to two months in the same institute after the cruise to participate in the data analysis and processing on completion of the cruise. The fellowship provides international airfare and subsistence.

New web resource

The Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) Project Office has recently created a new website on ocean fertilisation. The Project Office welcomes and feedback/contributions and hopes that the website will evolve to serve the needs and interests of the community.
