10th SOLAS SSC meeting

A successful meeting was held in Lueneburg, near Hamburg, Germany, from 26 to 28 April, despite the travel disruptions caused by the volcanic ash cloud. The working papers can be downloaded from the meeting web page.

Mid-term strategy

Among other things, the SSC meeting addressed the way forward for the 'mid-term strategy' , a set of key research areas identified as priorities for SOLAS.
New web pages will be created shortly to help coordinate research and e-mails will be sent to the community encouraging participation in these research themes. The mid-term strategy will also be the theme of the next SOLAS Newsletter.

Meetings will be held on each of the topics, starting with a lunchtime meeting on 'Sea ice biogeochemistry and interactions with the atmosphere' at the International Polar Year Open Science Conference (8-10 June, Oslo, Norway). Contact Jacqueline Stefels for further details.

Another topic is 'Air-sea fluxes in eastern boundary upwelling systems and oxygen minimum zones', coordinated by Veronique Garcon. A 3-day meeting will be held at IMARPE in Lima, Peru, with the aim to stimulate internationally coordinated oceanic and atmospheric experiments in 2011-2012. Go to meeting web page.

COST Action-735

6th Management Committee meeting

The last of the COST-735 meetings for the financial year 2009-10 has just taken place and proposals for 2010-11 are currently being reviewed by the COST Action-735 Management Committee (MC). The MC meeting will take place at the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW) in Hamburg, Germany, from 25 to 26 May. It will be attended by 10 MC members from 8 countries, the IPO staff and an administrative officer from COST. The members will discuss the Action's progress over the past year and select the proposals for workshops and Short Term Scientific Missions to be funded in 2010-11.
