SOLAS Mid-term Strategy - Update

Air-sea gas fluxes at eastern boundary upwelling systems and Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs)
A workshop of 2.5 days will take place in Lima, Peru on the 8-10 November 2010, involving key players in this theme. The scientific programme is being finalised. To find out more about the background and the logistics of this workshop visit www.solas-int.org/omzmeeting

seaiceSea-ice biogeochemistry and interactions with the atmosphere
Theme leader, Jacqueline Stefels, has recently returned from 2 very successful consultation meetings held during the International Glacial Society symposium in Tromsø, Norway, (1 June) and the International Polar Year Conference, Oslo, Norway (8 June). Participants showed a strong interest in establishing a SOLAS sea-ice biogeochemistry network.
Plans are well underway to hold a 2.5-day workshop in Amsterdam, Netherlands in Mid April 2011. The COST Action 735 is financially supporting part of the workshop.
A webpage on the SOLAS website dedicated to this theme will be constructed shortly.

SOLAP textbookSurface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Processes (SOLAP) textbook
The SOLAS IPO will be sending copies of the SOLAP textbook to the libraries of institutions involved in SOLAS science across the globe so as many students and young researchers as possible will have access to this book. As there are limited copies the IPO have particularly targeted institutions in developing countries and those new to SOLAS relevant research.

megacityMegacities and the coastal zone: air-sea interactions
A multidiciplinary group of 15 scientists from 9 countries, including experts in atmospheric chemistry, climate, marine biogeochemistry and social sciences came together in Norwich, UK last April to address specific scientific issues surrounding air-sea interactions of megacities in the coastal zone. Discussions ranged far and wide and a peer-reviewed paper is in preparation. Look out for a full meeting report in SOLAS Newsletter Issue 11.

Upper ocean nutrient limitation: processes, patterns and potential for change
A special session at the AGU/ASLO Ocean Sciences meeting in Oregon (Feb 2010) provided the opportunity for a small pre-meeting prior to a dedicated 3 day workshop "Upper Ocean Nutrient Limitation: Processes, Patterns and Potential for Change" to be held in Southampton, UK, 3-5 November 2010.

COST Action-735 COST 735

The 6th COST Action 735 Management Committee meeting was held at the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW) in Hamburg on 25-26 May 2010. The committee reviewed a number of meeting proposals. Click here for a list of meetings approved for funding this financial year. In addition the committee approved funding for 4 Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs). The meeting minutes are available on the COST Action 735 website.
