Call for European Science Foundation Exploratory Workshop proposals
The European Science Foundation (ESF) invites proposals for Exploratory Workshops in all disciplines. These small, interactive group sessions are aimed at opening up new directions in research to explore new fields with a potential impact on developments in science. The workshops, which usually last 1-3 days, have a wide participation from across Europe and involve mature scientists as well as young, independent researchers and scholars with leadership potential. The relatively small scale (in terms of people involved) provides an ideal platform for focus on the topic and for all participants to contribute to discussions and plan follow-up collaborative work. Interdisciplinary topics are greatly encouraged.

Identifying uncertainties in Arctic climate predictions -Invitation to tender
The NERC Arctic Research Programme invites tenders for a five month project to identify the processes/ feedbacks which contribute to the range of uncertainty in future Arctic climate predictions. NERC is seeking an individual or a small team from a NERC eligible UK research organisation to undertake the specified research. They will work closely with the Met Office to deliver the project. Activities will focus on analysing the relative role of atmosphere and ocean processes in driving sea ice changes and applying methods to identify processes which lead to uncertainty in future predictions of Arctic sea ice and surface temperature in greater detail.
The work will take place in the period May - September 2010. The contract and its deliverables must be satisfactorily completed by 30 September 2010. Tenders for up to £50k total cost to NERC will be accepted.

Launch of SCOR Working Group 131 'The legacy of in situ iron enrichment experiments -data compiling and modelling' database
The database will be launched at a workshop on 21 February 2010 (1400-1700) at the ASLO/AGU Open Sciences Meeting in Portland. This relational database resides at the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) and will enable inter-comparisons of data between experiments conducted in the HNLC waters of the Southern Ocean, Equatorial and Subarctic Pacific. The organisers (Phil Boyd, WG co-chair and Cyndy Chandler, BCO-DMO) hope that this will stimulate exciting and novel opportunities for data synthesis and modeling, from 1-dimensional biological models through to complex 3-dimensional ocean biogeochemical models. The aim is to use this launch as a platform for planning a modeling/synthesis workshop in 2011. More information
The database can be accessed here prior to the workshop (text based or GIS interface) -select FeSyn as the programme name then find the project and cruise of interest.
There will be a further lauch at the SOLAS-IMBER session at the European Geosciences Union Assembly in May 2010 (see abstract). Contact Phil Boyd or Dorothee Bakker for further details.
