There are numerous levels and categories of SOLAS projects.
The majority of projects that SOLAS has involvement with are externally funded individual projects located around the world. These projects share the same goals of SOLAS (as outlined in the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy) but SOLAS has very little direct involvement with. These are termed SOLAS Umbrella Projects.
A small number of projects are directed by the SOLAS Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and are known as Task Teams. Typically these Task Teams perform specific actions such as formulating White Papers and addressing areas of significant and crucial importance. SOLAS Data Management Project is a specific project which is working in conjunction with SOLAS Integration Project to enable the sharing of data generated in SOLAS projects (umbrella and endorsed).
Finally some projects specifically have foci that align closely with the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy and require some formal recognition perhaps in the approval phase of the project. These projects are called SOLAS endorsed projects.
SOLAS has a number of key focus areas which are centred around the Science Plan and Implementation Policy document and forms the basis of SOLAS scientific research. The three broad areas of focus that defines SOLAS research are:
SOLAS encourages researchers to notify the SOLAS community of your projects to allow a more cohesive integration of research efforts to thrive.
If you believe your project falls within one of these scope and would like to notify the SOLAS community you can do so by filling in our online form.

SOLAS Data Management and Data Integration: Data collected from SOLAS related projects can be of great use to other researchers within the SOLAS community. Together with SOLAS Project Integration, the SOLAS IPO have initiated a metadata portal http://gcmd.nasa.gov/portals/solas/ for SOLAS-related field projects. Through this facility, researchers in the SOLAS community can identify useful projects, information and data that have taken place.
In addition SOLAS Project Integration is facilitating the production of global datasets in order to best-quantify estimates of air-sea fluxes of gases and particles. For more information or to view the SOLAS Project integration website please go to http://www.bodc.ac.uk/solas_integration/
The SOLAS International Project Office (SOLAS IPO) has developed a data management policy [link to data management document], to which it strongly recommends the scientific SOLAS community adheres.
