Addressing Ocean Acidification through a Fit-for-purpose Capacity Building Program
A large body of evidence is documenting the impact of ocean acidification on marine species and ecosystems. While there is enough evidence to support global actions toward CO2 mitigation, local data are needed to develop and implement adaptation solutions. These data are often lacking, especially in developing countries. This article summarizes the work done over the last 11 years by the IAEA Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre, in close collaboration with SOLAS and IMBER, to promote best practices for ocean acidification research adapted to local needs and existing capacity, with a strong focus on the global south. It describes a goal-oriented and evidence-based capacity building strategy that can be used by intergovernmental organizations, nongovernmental organisations, and other institutions engaged in capacity development.
