BEPSII Arctic Policy Brief

BEPSII, 2021

The SOLAS co-sponsored project "Biogeochemical Exchange Processes at Sea Ice Interfaces (BEPSII)", has released its Arctic Policy Brief on "Effective Arctic climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies require consideration of biogeochemical and ecological impacts of sea-ice decline".

The policy brief summarizes three recent papers on climate change and Arctic sea-ice biogeochemistry, sea-ice ecosystems and ecosystem services and sea-ice geoengineering impacts on sea-ice biogeochemistry. The policy brief and related research were highlighted at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) within sessions of the Cryosphere pavilion.

BEPSII is in the process of compiling a parallel effort for the Antarctic, including a position analysis on impacts of Antarctic sea-ice changes on ice and ocean biogeochemistry and a follow up Antarctic policy brief. For more information, please contact Dr. Nadja Steiner.
