Issue 40: Biogeochemical Exchange Processes at Sea-Ice Interfaces (BEPSII) General Meeting 2025

The SOLAS Event Report Issue 40 reports on Biogeochemical Exchange Processes at Sea-Ice Interfaces (BEPSII) General Meeting 2025 , which took place from 14-16 March 2025, in Barga, Italy and online.

Before the general meeting started, early-career researchers (ECRs) in the Steering Committee organised a brainstorming session on writing an ECR-led paper focusing on the ethical, interdisciplinary, and communicative challenges faced by ECRs, particularly in polar marine science. The first part of the general meeting was dedicated to updates on scientific developments and highlights of important BEPSII activities. The second part of the meeting was dedicated to discussions of the new BEPSII science plan.

The BEPSII meeting was attended by 22 participants on site and a variable number (up to 20) online. It was an energising meeting with lots of new ideas and ECRs taking leading roles in specific actions. BEPSII’s core principle is that BEPSII is – and wishes to stay – a bottom-up community, in which people are stimulated to take up new ideas they can’t fulfil on their own. The 2025 meeting proved again that this concept is working.
